El CAJON POST 303

THE AMERICAN LEGION

DEPARTMENT OF CALIFORNIA

The American Legion was originated to support the returning veterans from WWI. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veteran’s organization, which is devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.

The American Legion and El Cajon Post 303 have progressed from just veterans’ affairs to promoting Americanism and Children and Youth Programs that emphasize and support the American way of life.

El Cajon American Legion Post 303 serves the East County including El Cajon, Lakeside and Santee areas. The Post was chartered in 1927 and has been in continuous operation to this day. The Post has over 250 current members.

In addition to participating in numerous American Legion Programs, the Post sponsors delegates from East County High Schools to participate in the Boys’ and Girls’ State Program, they conduct a National High School Oratorical Contest and donate bicycles to El Cajon’s W.D. Hall Elementary School at the school’s monthly Character Builder Assemblies.

The Post actively supports the Army, Air Force and Navy ROTC Units at USD, UCSD, and their associated Colleges and Universities in San Diego County.

The Post holds Memorial Day and Veterans Day Ceremonies at Centennial Plaza. In cooperation with the Veterans Coalition of El Cajon the Veterans Day Ceremonies include presentation of the City of El Cajon Veteran of the Year.

The Post’s Grant Committee approved and sent FY 23/24/25 Grants to The San Diego Veterans Day Parade, The Boys and Girls Club of East County, The Weighorst Museum, and Boy Scout Troop 262 (for an Eagle Scout Project).

Post 303 is a leader in the El Cajon Veterans community. Three Post members currently serve on the El Cajon Veterans Coalition. Four Post members have been honored as El Cajon Veterans of the Year in the past nine years. Ray Moody was chosen in 2016, Mark Goodman in 2018, Jon Fleming in 2021 most recently James Daniels in 2024.
